The Algarve is the most south-westerly part of Europe and boasts more than 300 days of sunshine per year. Like the rest of Portugal is operates on GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) just like the UK.

The region has an extremely rich and varied history, including five hundred years as a kingdom of the Moors from northern Africa. The Arabic influences are evident to this day, the decorative chimney pots, the whitewashed buildings, and even the language.

Despite its huge popularity as a holiday destination since the 1960’s, the Algarve has retained its character, both culturally and architecturally – having resisted the temptation to line the beautiful beaches with high-rise apartment blocks. It is in fact the perfect combination of tourist-friendly people and facilities, and the natural beauty of coastal and inland areas.

When you’ve finished exploring the interior of the Algarve on one of the many jeep safaris, or have worked up an appetite on the beach, why not sample some of the delicious food and wines that the Algarve has to offer? The region is renowned for the variety of fresh-daily fish and sea-food, so take advantage of the opportunity to try something new. If your prefer ‘turf’ to ‘surf’, then try some freshly-grilled chicken, pork or beef steak.

All through the year, the various councils in the Algarve lay on a huge variety of entertainments and activities to appeal to all interests and ages. In addition to these, there are often local ‘festas’ taking place which continue national or local traditions, so go along and experience something different.

For sports enthusiasts, as well as the many golf courses in the region there is a variety of other sports and activities available such as parascending, scuba diving, beach volleyball and fishing.

History, sport, beaches, beautiful countryside, modern entertainments, great food and wine the list goes on; in short, however you wish to spend your holiday, it is guaranteed that there is something for the whole family!
